Deadwood cards are cards that have been unmatched or unmelded. Once a player has knocked, the other players must lay off cards on existing sets. A player’s deadwood cards count against him so you must know that aces are worth 1 point, face cards are worth 10 points and all other cards are worth their numeric value.

You have to be cautious and strategic about knocking because if a player knocks and the opponent has a lower deadwood count of cards, the knocker automatically loses. This type of win is called and “undercut”.

So there are three main actions in the pursuit of winning Gin Rummy: Ginning, Knocking and Undercut.
